I've been teaching in some form or another since I was 11 years old when I worked as an assistant martial arts instructor at my martial arts school in Minnesota. During the pandemic when so many kids were struggling with distance learning I was so thrilled to be able to jump in and lend some one on one help to these kids who were often not getting the attention they needed to succeed at school and at home.
When I was growing up I was very slow to read, so I have personal experience with the frustrations that learning delays can cause for students, and how difficult it can be to get the help they really need. Because of this experience, I really value meeting a student exactly where they are, and tailoring the work they do and the help they receive to their current skills. I never want my students to feel frustrated, but I do want them to feel challenged.
